Men’s Conference Registration

CONFIRMED! Dr. Scott Hahn

Dr. Scott Hahn has confirmed to Suncoast Catholic Ministries that he will be at the conference as planned! A few weeks ago, Dr Hahn had to have emergency surgery. Many of you contacted us concerning the situation and the conference. Dr. Hahn has been cleared to travel and we are thrilled to welcome him to Tampa as part of our annual men’s conference! We look forward to seeing each of you there.

Why Attend

To give you some context of what this conference is all about, let me tell you a story from one of our SCM team members:

“I had a scary encounter when I first moved to Florida.  One of our first weekends here my family went to a beach just south of Cocoa Beach.  Having dreamed about this experience, I charged towards the water.  I was shocked at the power of a wave when the first one hit me.  It didn’t slow me down though.  I kept moving farther from the shore, plowing through wave after wave.  My family, friends and I were out there for a long time.  Tired and thirsty I headed back towards shore to take a break.  That’s when it hit me… a current tugged at my feet and a wave hit me from behind.  In the blink of an eye, I found myself spinning in a wave!  Shear terror spread over me as I tried to figure out which way was up.  Not being prepared, I found my lungs burning as I clung to the final bit of air I had.  In the midst of the chaos a peace came over me.  I reached out my hand and felt the ocean floor.  With my hand bracing me, I quickly got my bearings and stood up out of the wave into waste deep water.”

Life can be like this.  We dream about it, plow through it and when we least expect it, it brings us to our knees.  Preparation, knowledge and the right support around us can make all the difference.

The Bible tells us that ours is a daily battle.  A Man’s life is a complicated one.  There are demands from work, family & friends.  We encounter the constant struggle to keep ourselves healthy and balanced: emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually.  The challenges we face are like waves bearing down upon us one after the other.  From time to time we must pull ourselves from the flow of life and reflect, learn and renew.

The Bible provides us Hope in Jesus Christ and points to tools we can use.

“Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.  Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil…In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:10-11, 16- 17

The Men’s Conference is an opportunity to REFLECT.  Confessions will be offered throughout the day.  Mass will be celebrated.  Great speakers will provide material to stir our minds and hearts.

The Men’s Conference is a chance to LEARN from others and further strengthen our faith.  Both the men who are putting on the conference and many of the men attending will be able to provide invaluable knowledge and insight to the questions we ask ourselves every day.

The Men’s Conference is a time to RENEW.  It’s an opportunity to step away for a day and regain our footing.  It’s the perfect setting: sitting among men who are seeking God and daily struggling with many of the same issues.

Gus Lloyd

Gus and Michelle Lloyd have been married for over 30 years.  They are the proud parents of four children, ranging in age from 15 to 28. Gus grew up in the Catholic faith.  As a kid, his family was like a cross between the Brady Bunch (3 boys and 3 girls…Gus is Greg Brady) and the Partridge Family (very musical).  They used to have a family choir which sang at their local parish, Mary, Help of Christians in Fairborn, OH.  He went to Catholic school, was an altar boy and did all the stuff that Catholic kids do.  As a teen, Gus fell away from his faith.  After graduating from high school, Gus went to broadcasting school to pursue the career that he knew he wanted ever since he was a little kid…radio.  Gus had always loved the old Boss Radio Jocks and had shown a talent for public speaking at an early age.  He was a lector at age 10, and won a state championship in a speech contest in high school.Gus got his first radio gig in 1979 at WFIV, a small country AM station in Kissimmee, FL. Shortly after that, he moved back to Ohio to wed Michelle in 1980.  From there he did the radio gypsy thing…moving from market to market to get better gigs and more money. Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, the couple decided to move to Florida to start a family business, Lloyd’s of Lawndom. When their oldest (and only, at the time) daughter went through a near-drowning incident, life began to change.  Michelle gave her life to Christ, and Gus did the same some months later.  After worshipping at a non-denominational church, Gus and Michelle decided to check out the Catholic Church again.  When they did, they saw the Bible come to life! After much prayer and study, Gus felt the calling to become a Catholic evangelist. In the early 1990′s, he attended the Catholic School of Lay Evangelization in Pensacola, FL.In 1992, after the death of his youngest brother, Gus was called back into radio. WBVM, the Catholic station in Tampa, FL asked if Gus would do a Friday contemporary Christian music show.  Before long, they asked if he would host their morning show, and Gus agreed.  After 3 years of hosting the morning show, Gus left to become a Sales Manager with a computer training company.  But after 10 month and many calls asking that they bring Gus back, WBVM asked Gus to come back and start out their new format, Spirit FM.  Gus was the popular morning show host at Spirit FM for another 9 years. In the summer of 2006, the Archdiocese of New York called to talk with Gus about hosting the morning show on the new Catholic Channel on Sirius Satellite Radio.  He went on the air December 4, 2006. Seize the Day is now on Sirius XM 129 (not Sirius 129 and XM 117).  Also, his show will begin airing from 7-11 a.m. eastern time beginnning in July.Gus also does voice over work for radio, TV, video and the Internet. He speaks at conferences and parishes around the country on topics ranging from spirituality to apologetics to being a
Catholic in today’s world.

Volunteer Opportunities

Each of us is made in God’s image and likeness.  Our unique reflection of God brings with it gifts and talents.   These were meant to be shared.   It is through our gift of self that we discover who we truly are and, more importantly, who God is!  It is vital that we give of ourselves in our families and our communities.

Suncoast Catholic Ministries has many opportunities to radiate God’s glory through our gift of self.

There are two main areas that you can help.

  1. Suncoast Catholic Ministries has many volunteer needs to support the planning, coordination and implementation of the Conferences and Events.
  2. We are always looking for new, innovative ways to share Jesus Christ with others.
